This fall each 2nd grade classroom raised a monarch butterfly caterpillar through its life cycles. They released it in September to make its long journey to Mexico. The students also participated in the Symbolic Migration project through JourneyNorth.org. They created paper butterflies that were sent to a school near the migration grounds in Mexico for the winter. Along with the butterflies, they sent information about Eisenhower School and Dubuque, Iowa, where the butterflies originated.
This spring they received a package of paper monarch butterflies from around the country that had spent the winter in Mexico, just like their real-life counterparts. They also received information from the school in Mexico at which their butterflies had spent the winter. Students each had butterflies to take home from schools in different cities and states that all participated in the Symbolic Migration. The 2nd grade team will be sending a donation to Journey North program to help them continue their work. It is wonderful to see how many kids around the country care about the monarch butterfly!
5th Grade students formed five-member teams and worked for several months to read the Iowa Childrens’ Choice Award nominees for this year. At the Eisenhower School Battle, we had nine participating teams who were all very excited about reading and well-prepared. At the Battle, teams answered questions about the ICCA books that they have read and studied. It was a very close competition and spectators were on the edge of their seats! The winning team at Eisenhower included Maura, Molly, Alex, Bella, and Ryder. This team went on to compete in the District Battle of the Books on May 17 that was also held at Eisenhower School.

The winning team from each elementary school came to Eisenhower on May 17 to compete in the District Battle of the Books. There was fierce competition during this Battle and it came down to a sudden-death round between Bryant and Eisenhower! After many rounds with a tie score, Eisenhower emerged as the winner of the district Battle! Congratulations to the awesome Eisenhower team on all of their hard work this year!
Thanks to the PTO for all of their support at Eisenhower School this year! We were able to purchase books for all grade levels with the money from the Scholastic Book Fair to enhance our library collection. We also used “Class Cash” to purchase additional STEAM-based activities for the Maker Space in the library, new Digital Citizenship books, materials for our library labeling project and and technology supplies. Thanks so much for all of your support!

Four Eisenhower 5th Graders attended STEAM Day at Keystone. They brought ideas back and taught a lesson on paper circuitry to all 5th grade classrooms. The kids had a great time working on their projects and donated them to the residents of Sunnycrest Manor to brighten their day!
The Spring 2019 Online Student Art Galleries are now live featuring art from the district’s elementary, middle and high school students!
These galleries area a way to highlight the remarkable products of art education in the district. It’s a digital attempt at bringing the work of our student artists at all levels into your home – because art is created for others to take in.
Kindergarten students had many special guests at school last week for their Mother’s Day Tea! Each student contributed to a classroom video to tell their mom why they are special. The kids loved making the videos and couldn’t wait to share them with their moms!
