Eisenhower School received two awards this fall from the Judy Chandlee Tribute to Teachers Grant. Judy Chandlee was a beloved Kindergarten teacher at Eisenhower School for many years and it means a great deal for the school to receive these grants.

Mrs. David wrote a grant to enhance literacy skills in Kindergarten. The purpose of this project is to incorporate a multi-sensory approach to literacy.  Students will explore reading using hands-on activities to keep them engaged and to reach all students at their reading level.  With these sensory materials, students will be supported during both teacher-led activities and independent literacy stations to help cement their knowledge of literacy skills and standards.

Mrs. Dostal wrote a grant to support social and emotional learning through library books. The goal of this project is to add books that address social and emotional needs into the Eisenhower library collection. Books have been selected from Follett that were reviewed by notable library associations as addressing social and emotional learning for kids. These books will be available to all students and teachers through the library to support social and emotional teaching goals and student needs. After the many disruptions to life caused by Covid, social and emotional learning has become a very important focus for schools across the country. Books can be a powerful tool to open up meaningful conversations and help students address these needs.

At each stop:

• Our registration team will be on hand to assist families in completing online registration for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year.
• Our human resources team will take applications and conduct on-the-spot interviews for a variety of district jobs, including paraprofessional, transportation and food/nutrition positions.
• Computers with internet access will be provided – and we even have a few treats in store!
• NOTE: A Marshallese interpreter will be available at each stop.

The Dubuque Community School District has again been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

This is the fourth consecutive year the district has received the honor.

Now in its 22nd year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the district answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“The district has long recognized the value of music education in our schools, and music remains an integral part of our curricular and extracurricular offerings,” said Stan Rheingans, superintendent of schools. “Our district commitment is underscored by tremendous partnerships throughout our community that support our work to expose students to music education. This honor is truly a community honor.”

Eisenhower students participated in Respect Week and were encouraged to reflect on inclusion, diversity, friendship, connection, and respect. A few students decided to share their personal reflections with us.

As a Special Olympics Unified Champion School, Eisenhower students concluded Respect Week by taking the Inclusion Pledge.

I pledge to look for the lonely, the isolated, the left out, the challenged, and the bullied. I pledge to overcome the fear of difference and replace it with the power of inclusion. I choose to include!
